Is there a way to get my suit altered in this fashion?
My job recently changed my uniform. I must now wear slacks and a button-down shirt with an optional suit jacket. I have two suit jackets, but i've realized that they do not fit at all. The shoulder pads are too big, and so are the waists of the jackets. (by at least 4 inches) Is there a way to have a suit jacket's shoulder pads taken out? Also, approximately how much can the waist of a suit jacket be reduced? About how much would this cost? I have also explored the options of purchasing a new suit, but i have noticed that there are no suits that come with a 12 inch drop, so alterations will be necessary anyway. (My measurements are as follows: 34 waist, 46 chest, 56 over arm.
Shoulder pads can be taken out easily, it does make the shoulder line droop a bit. Some tailors are quite adept at altering the sleeve head and they can take out some of the excess fabric that is no longer needed. For me it would be no biggie. Waists in jackets can be altered down about 6 inches without throwing off the entire fit. It's a common alteration. The cost will be between 15-45$ per alteration depending on the complexity of the alterations needed and depending on the tailor. A tailor who works with a dry cleaners will be cheaper, the guy with the tiny store front and decades of experience might charge more. It really depends. In the long run it's cheaper to have a good quality jacket altered than to go out and buy a new one, especially since new ones might not be as good quality as older jackets. Shop around and get a couple estimates for a few places, if possible. Places that do alterations are usually listed in the phone book or in on-line business directories.
