Right now I'm working as a Pressman's Apprentice and part time with his son making signs and decals with vinyl. I'm starting college, sometime eventually, this fall and I was wanting to take some courses that correspond and benefit with my work. I was suggested to CAD/AutoCAD and some Editing Program courses but a lot of colleges don't really...teach about the programs a lot of print shops use. A few examples of the things I do are..: type setting, business cards, printing press, resume's, brochures, pamphlets, invitations, photo editing, image sizing and reduction, computer cut lettering/vinyl cut lettering and image decal......so forth. Any suggestions off of any of that I'd appreciate.
Sounds like you would need to take some graphic design classes. I'm majoring in Graphic Design at The Art Institute and they focus on this kind of stuff. So all the stuff that you listed here are things I've learned in the classes I've taken there. Depending on the college you're going to, the classes might be a little different. For graphic design majors, you should learn typography, design layout, Adobe programs: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc. If your school doesn't offer courses on learning these programs, there are also books that teach you how to use the program step by step, which are very helpful because a lot of the beginning courses I've had for those programs all of my instructors sucked! haha. But once you start using it everyday and practice you'll find it easier to learn and use. Also learning to use the Mac would be beneficial, most designers prefer Macs over PCs.
