what would be a decent starter camera for an amateur, just shooting as a hobby?

im just starting to shoot some friends for fun, but id really like to get a better camera and make my shots look a bit more professional- im not going to try to WORK as a photographer or sell shots in any way, so i am just looking for a camera that produces images that aren't the typical fuzzy, hard -to- photo shop kind the average basic cameras produce, but still easy enough for the amateur to understand,. also, does anyone know of a particularly good site that sells used pro cameras? thanks in advance :)

do 35mm. It's so much cheaper to get professional quality results. Buy an SLR (Canon, Nikon, etc) and a decent 50-55mm lens (aka prime lens). For instance, this picture was taken with a camera that you could buy for about $50 on eBay. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bodie-bailey/535757808/

BTW, this wasn't taken by me, just a totally random example.

Using film has lots of built in advantages to a budding photographer. One, having a limited number of shots per roll helps you develop good habits, like NOT shooting 300 pictures of one scene. And not being able to see them until later gives you time to ruminate on the photos, or forget them all together. And when you get them back you'll look at them with a fresh mind.

Good luck!
