Why is figure skating a sport and ballet an art?
Figure skating, like dancing, requires technical expertise, training and endurance. It's hard physical work, like track and field events or speed skating or basketball. Unlike those other sports, however; there is no objective measure of quality. Points are awarded based on the judges' opinions. Winning is determined by a combination of best form, execution and style rather than who finished first or jumped farthest or scored the most goals. No one has to wear a costume, interpret the music or have beautiful lines when wrestling or lifting weights but they do in figure skating. In many ways, figure skating is more similar to dancing than to speed skating. So what makes it a sport rather than an art?
It's a very good question to be sure. You could easily judge both ballet and skating. I suspect that ballet has been around longer and is stuffily considered an art form. Since it's only experienced by a small segment of the population, no one has cared enough to judge it (as in scoring).
