My dog has never seen snow before so I need to know if I need to get him shoes for the winter so I may take him out to go potty. I don't want to make him feel stupid or make it uncomfortable for him; being this is going to be a big adjustment for him any way. Are his paws ok for trips outside or do I need to get him booties?
I live in NYC where it may not get as cold as in Chicago, but it gets cold and when it snows can be miserable.
Your dachshund doesn't need shoes. Also, he may have problem walking in them because of the short legs.
As long as there is no snow, he will be fine. Get him a nice warm coat for those very cold days (I'm assuming he's a smooth)
Now for when it snows, get some Mushers Secret and place it inbetween the pads of his feet, on the pads and between the toes so he doesn't get ice balls. When it snows, sanititation department salts the roads. The salt irritates the dogs feet, so make sure when you get him home, you rinse of his feet and dry them.
If you make the snow a fun and positive experience he'll enjoy it, just don't keep him out too long. My dachsie loves the snow.
