Inline Hockey Starter Help?
Alright, I'm from southern California, and I just now discovered NHL. I am in love. I would love to play Hockey, but closest ice rink is far, SO I think I am going to decide to play Inline Hockey.
But where do I start? I'll probably won't start playing with a club or anything, just get down skating and shooting first.
My questions:
1) Does it matter what kind of Roller Blades I get? Or are they all the same?
2)What Pads are a necessity for just skating around in a rink?
3) Do I need the inline hockey pants?
Alright, thanks for your time! (I don't have any hockey experience, I use to skate pretty well though)
1. Yes. They are not the same. You will need hockey skates. Eventually they will be useful if one day you decide to join a roller/inline hockey league. Playing with regular rollerblades could work, but I wouldn't suggest it. They should be back ups, but not the actual one you use. Hockey skates are more protective, they don't have rear break (which you could remove from the regular rollerblades), they are made so you can do cross overs, turn, change direction quickly, and break more smoothly than with other types and they are lower (nearer to the ground). I'm sure the kind of wheels differ a little bit (soft/hard) but I don't really know about that.
2. For players, pads are not necessary especially if you're just skating around. But if you really want to play safe, then you should be fine with roller hockey shinguards. If you're not a good skater yet I would also recommend getting knee protectors, we never know. For goalies, street/ball hockey pads are okay since you might rip off your ice pads if you use them on concrete.
3. Not necessary. Like outdoor hockey, I've never seen someone play with hockey pants and I don't think you need them. But if you plan on starting playing for a league then you could buy them to get used to the feel of skating in them.
EDIT: are you sure there are no other rinks than the one you found? You could always check to make sure at http://www.rinktime.com
