Being a new "Hockey Dad", I have the task of buying my 11 year old a new stick. He is around 5' tall and weighs around
95 lbs. I see you can buy, junior,intermediate, senior sticks.
Which one should I buy, and what about a "flex".He plays defense on his team. Any help picking out the proper stick would be great.
The best thing you can do for him is to buy a run-of-the-mill wooden stick for right now. Don't worry about flex, or curves, or anything else. He needs to learn the game before you start outfitting him with a $200 composite stick. Believe me, at that age, unless he is a phenom, it won't make a difference. You need to take a few things into consideration. You stated his height, and weight, but what about the size of his hands? Are they big, or small? the junior stick's shaft is smaller around than an intermediate, so if his hands are small, a junior would be good. i would suggest starting off with as little of a curve as possible. Big curves look cool, but hinder your all-around ability to learn to stickhandle, and make backhand passes/shots. Once he gets a bit more skill, he will start to develop a sense of what he wants out of a stick, and then you can go for one of the more expensive ones. Olso, at 11, he is still growing, so he will need new sticks often, so keep that in mind. To properly size the stick, he should be in his skates, and when you stand the stick straight up and down in front of him, with the tip of the blade on the ground, the butt end of the stick should come up somewhere between his chin and his nose. Some players prefer the skick to be a bit shorter, to maneuver a bit better, and some players like the stick to be a bit longer, for more reach.
