Overhauling an engine?
Got an engine from a junkyard.
tore it down and got it all apart..
ordered a master rebuild kit....(1990 4.3 v6 Chevrolet)
Put it together and not take it to the machine shop? Something serious I am over looking? .
Notes: Upon inspection, the ridge on the top of the cylinder walls was not that bad. Pistons came out with little fight. I just didnt like how old oil was caked and baked all over the oil pan and valve covers. It was disgusting.
All the bolts came out easy, I dont think the engine ever got over heated.
whats your opionion?
Well, you ask for my opinion and here it is. The cylinder walls should be checked for taper and roundness and carefully measured for piston to bore clearance. The crankshaft should be checked and the bearing clearances carefully measured. I've always found the best overhauls usually involve boring the block to true up the cylinders and installing matching pistons for proper clearance. Unless the crank is abused, std. bearings usually fit fine after polishing the journals.
It's an old adage that we never seem to have the time to do it right, but we always can find the time to do it over.
